This program aims to establish a model in the humanities that currently exists in the social sciences: successful students will have career choices both within and outside of the academy.  Inside of the academy there has been a recent spate of job advertisements for students with multiple linguistic competencies, as well as for professors in interdisciplinary programs in the humanities.  Students from this program would be ideal candidates for such positions, in addition to positions in more traditional language and culture departments.  Training in an applied skill will help prepare students for employment outside of the academy, whether in a non-profit cultural institution, a government institution in the U.S. or Europe, or in the private sector.
